Midnight in Miami

When the Arts Council of Wood Buffalo throws an event, they don’t just hand out awards—they put on a full-blown show. And in 2024, Hexwave Media had the honour (and the creative challenge) of helping bring that vision to life on the big screen at the Excellence in Arts Awards Show in Fort McMurray.

It all started in 2023, when I was commissioned to create a video reveal for the theme of the 2024 Awards. Not only did I deliver the final chosen theme, but I also created two alternate versions showcasing different themes the committee was considering. The other two videos are yet to be released as they wanted to hold on to them for potential future shows.

Then came 2024. The Arts Council circled back and asked me to dive even deeper. And oh, we dove:

🎬 Award Category Videos

Each award had its own dedicated video intro, designed to match the overall theme and add a little dramatic flair before the winner was announced. Short, punchy, and memorable—just the way award intros should be.

📺 80s-Themed Opening Montage

Yes, you read that right. We kicked things off with a nostalgic montage of 80’s shows and cartoons, complete with retro graphics, synthwave vibes, and just enough VHS fuzz to make you feel like you were watching Saturday morning cartoons in your pajamas. It was the perfect blend of fun and flashback.

🌇 One-Hour Sunset Loop

To set the mood as guests arrived at Keyano Theatre, I created a one-hour ambient loop of a sun slowly setting—designed to play on the big screen while people found their seats. Subtle, calming, cinematic… and very retro. The video shows a very synthwave style sun setting over geometric mountains, and it was built to slowly set over the hour and have the northern lights slowly come out over the last 10 mins of the video.

💥 Digital Explosion Magic

Finally, in true “go big or go home” fashion, I was asked to add a digital explosion to a scene featuring a bomb. Yes, I made something blow up—on cue, and with just the right amount of dramatic impact. Because what’s an awards show without a little special effects flair?
